HI Michael, Yes that will work! I wouldn't recommend it though because when the fleece is zipped in you'll end up with a cold spot on the front of the jacket.
Thanks. But isn’t that the whole idea about the zip in system? Mix and match for more warmth/layers and changing conditions?

Yes, that's right but there's no getting round that once the fleece is attached and because of how it is zipped in you rely on the front zip of the jacket for protection from the elements which leads to that cold spot.
