Alpine climbing is a balancing act, literally and figurativelythe technical aspects of working your way up a mountain demand your full attention, so being distracted and left cold by improper clothing can be kind of a big deal. Montane‘s Black Ice 2.0 Men‘s Down Jacket is designed to take the weather worry out of alpine missions, so you can stay comfortable and focused on what you‘re doing, not on your plummeting core temperature.
The Black Ice‘s best trick is its Primaloft Gold Down Blend insulation, which combines super-warm, light, and lofty down with water-resistant Primaloft Gold synthetic, so you can stay warm even if the jacket gets a little wet and not have to pay the weight penalty of full synthetic. The insulation is packed inside of a water-resistant Freeflow Ultralite nylon ripstop shell and Peaq Down downproof lining, and the jacket‘s stitched with a boxwall construction that prevents down migration and the resulting cold spots. The arms are stitched through and articulated, which increases mobility, and they‘re tailored to move separately from the hem, so raising your arms doesn‘t mean exposing your waist.
An alpine jacket has to have enough bells and whistles, too, and the Black Ice is well outfitted without being busy. Montane engineered an insulated hood that has three-point adjustment to easily fit over a helmet, and it designed an elastic loop and small hook that allow to you roll the hood down and stow it away when the wind is whipping around your head. An internal waist drawcord, elastic hook-and-loop cuffs, and adjustable hem seal out drafts, and multiple pockets keep your hands warm, your water close, and your important gear within easy reach.
